Anyone know when was the last year the bay window caboose was made?
Hard to say. Cabooses are not like cars, i.e.,you wouldn't find them on 'new car lots.' Rather, they were made only when the manufacturer received orders and the specs from the railroads who wanted them. This being the case, you would have to actually track down the railroads who opted for bay window cabooses and then find out which railroad ordered the last bay window caboose manufactured. This is not an easy task. However, I would broadly say it may have been in the late 1960s or very early 1970s.
But as you probably know, cabooses were replaced by FREDs in the early 1980s. Cabooses, being a non revenue car, were necessary evils on trains before FREDs. The FREDs saved the railroads money but a true bit of Americana disappeared when cabooses were elimnated.
