Is there a standard size for model trains?
Sine I was a child I wanted to collect model trains. Recently my gf bought me a model train for my bday. I have seen different sizes in the hobby shops and I was wondering if there is a "popular" size. I do not care for the large ones (no offense to those who do) and I do not want "tiny" trains... Is "NH" a common size?
My intention is to build one of the monumentous train "towns" you see in exhibits. I do not want to spend years collecting sizes that may difficult to keep up with.
Thank you to all of you for answerting. This has reeeeeealllly been helpful.
YES, it is worth 10
HO is the most popular size with about two thirds of hobbyists specializing in that scale. A typical train car is about 6-8" long in this scale
N scale is the next most popular with about 20% of hobbyists choosing that size. A typical train car is about 3 - 4" long in this scale.
The other scales are not as popular.

Even if you are into collectibles and other types of models, you might not know all of the benefits that people enjoy from what are sometimes called toy model trains. Make no mistake, however, they are far from being toys. People who collect these models have been known to take them very seriously. Model trains have more to offer than other types of models that a person could choose to collect.
When it comes to model trains, variety is always the spice of life. These types of models come in a large variety of forms and sizes. It would be very difficult to mention them all here. The biggest difference is in size. Many of these trains come in different size ratios. The most common are the "O", "HO", "N" and "Z" gauges. Some people prefer the very small trains while others enjoy the construction of very large ones.
People who collect model trains have the advantage of designing their own environments to run them in. This is referred to as the "benchwork." Some prefer a large city or small town setting. Others choose to build natural landscapes to lay out their track. This is one of the unique benefits shared by model railroad enthusiasts - the creativity of designing their own scenery.
When people look at toy model trains, they think it would be impossible to move from one location to another. Quite the opposite is true. These layouts are usually designed with landscapes that fold up and pack very easily. This allows a model train setup to be moved from one site to another. This is very handy for those that want to display them at a convention or shopping mall.
Model railroaders are usually looking for ways to reach out and communicate with other modelers. In the past there have been several print publications that would help them accomplish this. This has become even easier on the internet. You may want to search for any number of model railroad forums and web sites. By sharing your experiences and learning from others - you can grow a great deal.
Many people look at a these small trains and wonder what powers them. The power is carried in the tracks and used to drive tiny electric motors in the engine car. Some older types of model trains were actually run off of little steam engines - just like their very large counterparts.
Now you know a few more things that the average person might not know about toy model trains. These collectible items are very attractive and customizable. The hobby is fun for all ages and is something that can be passed on through the family. Just remember, once you start its hard to stop!
