Ho Scale Model Train Layouts

Model trains come in a great variety of sizes. Each size is a standard which has developed over time. Some are more popular than others and some have even become obsolete. The size of model trains can either be described as gauge or scale. Scale is the ratio between the real world train and the model for example, 1:87 means that if you place 87 model locomotives in a line it will give you the size of 1 real, full sized locomotive. Gauge is the measurement of distance between the two model rail lines.

Why do we have so many different scales and gauges? Well, we all have different needs and requirements when it comes to building our own model railway. We may have a small attic space which allows us a layout space of a meter square. You would find it quite difficult to fit an O gauge (one of the larger scales) railway in this small space. Not only will the curves be too tight, leading to trains derailing but you will also be limited in the track layout plan options making it less interesting to run trains.

In the case of a small space you have the option of selecting a smaller scale such as N gauge. This model train scale is much smaller than O gauge and you will be able to fit a really interesting track layout in the 1 meter square space that you have.

Space is not the only consideration however when selecting a scale or gauge. Your interest may lie in the building of your own model locomotives or carriages. You may wish to pour a lot of effort into creating beautiful models with a lot of detail. In this case, the larger scales will be more suitable as it allows you to create all the intricate details without the need for a magnifying glass and perfect hand co-ordination.

Larger scales are very popular with older enthusiasts as their eye sight may not be as sharp as it once was.

If your interest lies in the operation of trains over an interesting vast network, then you may wish to opt for a smaller scale and fit more stations, goods yards and running lines in to your layout.

Ultimately in most cases the choice of model train scale is a trade-off between your interests and available resources.

Here is a brief list of popular scales (from smallest to largest) and their pros and cons:

Z scale: Although there are smaller scales such as ZZ and T, Z scale is one of the smallest scales which is commercially readily available in most hobby stores. Vast networks of rail can be fit into a relatively small space. The range of models available for this scale however may be limited to mainly North American prototypes.

N scale: This is the most popular of the smaller scales commercially available. There is a large variety of rolling stock and scenery items available for this scale which makes it the most ideal small scale to start out in.

HO / OO scale: HO scale is the most popular scale world-wide. It is a well balanced trade-off between detail and the amount of space needed to run the models. Rolling stock and scenery items can be purchased for nearly every operating prototype. The size is also big enough for the average enthusiast to have a go at building models themselves. OO gauge uses the same track as HO scale and is more popular in the UK. There are slight differences in the sizes of the models but they are generally compatible with each other.

O scale: This scale dates back to early clock-work trains. The size of the models is quite large and requires quite a lot of space to run. The detail however in these models can be quite high and a pleasure to view. There is a new movement called "O gauge - Fine Scale" where many enthusiasts have been pushing the boundaries of realism in their models and scenery.

G scale: This scale derives its letter G from "Garden". This is most popular scale for model garden railways. Equipment built in this scale is usually durable enough to withstand the elements of the outdoors.

In conclusion, probably the best way to determine which model train scale is best for you, it is a good idea to visit model railway exhibitions and see what others have done with the various scales and talk to the experts about your needs and requirements. They are usually extremely happy to share their knowledge. You can also visit online forums and message boards to discuss your ideas with other enthusiasts such as yourself.

Happy Model Railroading!
