How much energy does a LNER A4 steam locomotive consume?
In coal, or even better, in joules would be nice. I would like to know what the tender capacity is and how far could the A4s go without a coal stop. Also if I could get the same information for water would be nice.
You wouldn't happen to know what type of coal was used?
A4 class Pacific: tender water capacity, 5,000 gallons. Tender coal capacity, 8 tons. Tractive effort, 35,455 lb with 18.5" cylinders, 33,616 lb with 17" inside cylinders. Boiler pressure, 250 psi.
Coal was sufficient for a non-stop run between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh. Water was replenished en route using troughs in the tracks between the rails.
