door opening load bearing wall?
I am going to install a 48" pass through opening in a load bearing wall between the kitchen and dining room. I need to know how to figure out what size header I need ? I have been told to use a 4x12 with 4x4 supports and also 2 2x12's with a sheet of 1/2 " plywood sandwiched between them and then build a normal stud wall. I was also wondering about using engineered lumber like they use for floor joist and sealing rafters?
Check the American Wood Council site for beam/ header sizes over a given unsupported distance.
Should be able to span 48 " easily without going over the thickness of the 2x4 framing.
The plywood ' sandwich" is strong but might cause thickness issues when you add drywall.
As mentioned placement will dictate need for any additional vertical support.
Sistering 2 or more 2x4s is easier to work with than 4x4's & maybe stronger.
Just some tips I got from buds in the trades.
