Are you someone who enjoys detail? Do you like the idea of having your very own vast landscape and watching it operate in real time? If so, then you would definitely enjoy N gauge model trains. They are among the smallest model trains available (Z scale is smaller), and they are great for the novice or the expert. If you are dealing with a child however, they might not be the best choice simply because of the small parts. N gauge model trains may also be a bit small if you have a shaky hand or suffer from arthritis. Bigger trains can be easier to pick up.
An N scale layout can have some amazing detail fitted into a very small package. Even more detail can be added to the scenery around the track with running water, valleys, trees, even buildings if you so desire. You can build a living, breathing community frozen in time, save for the roar of the N scale diesel or steam train as it makes its way around the track.
When you buy your N Gauge model train, being at the size of 1:160 a normal train, you can normally buy a set that has matching cars and a caboose. If you want though, you can always build your set from the ground up, buying cars that meet your own expectations, and of course by choosing the best N scale caboose.
As a matter of interest the gauge for this scale measures 9mm between the rails. N is short for "nine" (9mm), and N scale is roughly half the size of HO (but that can vary a little between manufacturers).
The caboose is the last car in the line-up, and incidentally the last one people will see. You want it to look good, so make sure you choose a N scale caboose that people will be in awe of as it passes by. There are so many different cabooses that you can choose from. For example you could go with one that has a bay window, or even one that has steel sides. There are also quite a few other themes out there.
For example if you have a logging train you would want to go with a logging N scale caboose. Passenger trains will also require their own type of caboose, and you will be amazed to find out all of the different variations.
At the opposite end of the train you have the locomotive. The N scale diesel is a popular choice as it resembles an actual diesel train. The diesel trains in real life are approximately 200 feet in length, so their model counterparts will obviously be made to match. In other words according to its scale, the train would be about eighteen inches.
From the different ways to power them, to the awe and amusement they will cause as they roll around your track, you will find that N gauge model trains are definitely worth purchasing. They will entertain you for many years, and they will entertain anyone that you have over. Your friends will be in awe of your modeling capabilities and you will feel a sense of accomplishment as your train chugs through the hills, valleys, and tunnels.
