The Atlas Model Train company began with a man's love of model airplanes. Stephan Schaffan Sr. would often take his son and name sake Stephan Jr. along to the hobby shop where he would buy supplies for his model airplanes. Stephan being an enterprising young man hounded the hobby shop owner for a job. Fed up with the young man's frequent requests he threw some model train track at the young man and told him to find a way to improve it. He did. More innovations followed and Stephan Sr. soon realized that he and his 16 year old could make a business out of manufacturing track for model trains. With that realization, a new company was born.
Since 1949 these model trains have been known for their flexible track. What makes Atlas's tracks so good is that while the tracks of most of other train companies kink if bent wrong, these flexible tracks can be bent and re bent until you get the exact shape you want. These flexible tracks are ideal for making realistic spiral easement curves.
Over the years this company went on to make everything a model train enthusiast could want or need to build his own railroad. Atlas offers track, locomotives, rolling stock, building, people, cars, and even animals. You can recreate any major city for your locomotive to pull it's cars through, then round a few bends and curves and be in the country where sheep graze and the farmer's wife is hanging clothes out on the line.
If you have a large enough model railroad room, your locomotive and cars can travel across a country or around the world. Wherever your railroad goes, small towns and large cities can grow up around the tracks and the train stations. Model farmers can ship their wares off to market and groups can gather to hear the trains whistle as it passes. You can create a world of your own right in your own home.
