Model Train Stuff

Seeing a locomotive powering along gleaming rails has captivated the hearts and minds of people everywhere for over a century. Ever since the first trains were introduced as transportation, there were models to replicate the real thing. As time has gone by, the trains have become more and more realistic. These trains all have one thing in common: they need a track to run on. The model train track is something you will need to get to know if you are to be a successful model railroader.

While the sizes of the trains are measured by scale, the model train track is measured by gauge. These sizes are sometimes measured by the same letters which indicate the sizes of the trains in order to reduce confusion. The sizes of the tracks have been standardized by the industry in order to make sure no matter what the train manufacturer; the train will work on the equivalent sized tracks. The sizes of the tracks are measured in millimeters and will range from a 6.5 mm gauge to a 148 mm gauge track. The other part about gauge is the length. The standard gauge indicates a length of four feet, eight and a half inches. The narrow gauge tracks indicate a length of three feet. The shorter the length of track, the closer together the rails themselves will be.

While it is possible to buy a prefabricated model train track, there are many who believe there is no replacement for laying your own tracks. This is usually reserved for those who are either working with a group of people, or are highly experienced. The problems with laying your own tracks are making sure the rails are perfectly spaced. Any problems in the spacing of the tracks will cause the train to either lose connectivity, or derail. There are some who believe it is impossible to create a realistic landscape with the tracks available on the market.

Flexi tracks are a compromise which has been offered by the model railroad industry. This model train track snaps together like traditional tracks. The difference lies in the ability to bend the tracks to be the exact shape you want it to be. This offers a more realistic turning radius for mountain landscapes as well as turns in city terrains. The problem with the turns available in most fixed position tracks is they cause the train to turn in such a way which would not be possible in real life. Having control over turns allows railroaders more control over appearances without having to go through the lengthy process of laying their own track.

The rails on the model train track have evolved over the history of the industry. Brass has been one of the most popular rails available for many years. The reason for the popularity of brass rails lies in the fact they are easy to maintain and provide good connectivity. Rails have been produced in aluminum which has been popular for those looking for lighter tracks. The only problem with aluminum is it's susceptibility to corrosion over time. Another alternative rail is stainless steel which is not as susceptible to corrosion is far sturdier.

No matter what you are looking to accomplish as a model railroader, you will need the right model train track. While it is one of the most important elements of your train being able to run properly, it is also the easiest to replace. Don't worry too much about which one you buy as you can always replace it later if it is not what you are looking for. Have a fun with this magnificent hobby.
