Many model railroaders begin with the urge to see model trains running as soon as possible, and rush in to construct the first type of layout that occurs to them. The sad part to that is when they found out that they have committed to a design that is not of long term interest.

First step is to get out your pencil and put down a few ideas that will guide you in your planning. How much space is available for your complete layout? It is better to overestimate your space requirements than to find yourself later in cramped quarters that will necessitate ripping up track and starting over. Next, how much rolling stock do you have, and how much more do you plan having?

When you plan your first track layout, be sure to allow for future growth of your rail system. As you add to your rolling stock you will want more sidings, classification yards, wyes, reverse loops. The siding in today's layout may tomorrow become a complete new branch of your railroad empire. You may want to build a specialist layout with one major source of traffic, for example a steel mill, brewery or saw mill.

A considerable amount of planning results to the best and satisfying layouts. In the long run you will discover that planning and research can be a lot of fun. It is usually well worth the time and effort involved in getting things right from day one.
