What parts do i need to service my bike and clean the carbs?

and what is an 'oil filter bolt' and will i need one?

And for the carbs will i just need new float bowl gaskets?

Thanks
1984 Honda CB400cc Superdream twin

No offence meant, we all started somewhere but if you have to ask about basic stuff then don't attemp anything without a workshop manual.

An oil filter bolt is used to clamp up a housing in the engine. Its hollow and has holes drilled in the side to allow oil to circulate. You don't normally need one unless the old one is broken.

You will need: spark plugs , oil, oil filter, WD-40, etc. If the bike is running ok then don't touch the carbs.

First warm the bike up, either leave it idling for ten mins or go for a 10 mile ride to warm up the oil.

when you come back swich off the bike and wait ten mins for the oil to settle. Put a bowl or container under the sump ready to catch the old oil ( an old 5ltr oil bottle with the side cut out works well!). Remove the sump plug and then the oil filler cap ( this ensures a steady flow and stops it shooting all over the place!)

While the old oil is draining change the spark plugs. Put a little copper grease on the plug threads to stop them seizing into the head. Tighten them so they are hand tight then tighten them a half turn more.

While you have the plug leads off, spray a little WD-40 inside them to help keep out damp.

When the oil has finished draining from the sump plug hole, refit the sump plug using a new copper washer. Next undo and remove the oil filter bolt and remove the cover ( this may need a tap with a rubber mallet to loosen it) Inside you will find the filter, throw it away (responsibly!) and fit the new one. Make sure to put any O rings on that you need to and lube them with a smear of fresh oil to help them seal. Refit cover and bolt back in.

Refil the bike with the correct ammount of oil then replace the oil filler cap and start the bike. Check around the sump plug /oil filter bolt for any leaks. Stop the bike and leave it for ten mins....recheck oil level.
