Ringling Brothers Beats Animals: PETA's Undercover Investigation
Is What Makes News Always News?
As part of a protest by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals against what they believe is abusive treatment of animals, one PETA member took extreme action. Melissa Sehgal, with her nude body painted like a tiger, protested from a cage in Anaheim, California where Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus was to perform. Because PETA wants all circuses using animals boycotted, Sehgal held a sign reading, “Wild Animals Don’t Belong Behind Bars”. Although circus owner, Ken Feld, ran newspaper ads claiming PETA’s viewpoints were unfounded, Sehgal believed she was baring the facts.
To avoid baring anything, the City Council in Brooksville, Florida recently approved a new dress code that includes telling employees to observe “strict personal hygiene”. It also prohibits “exposed underwear, clothing with foul language, sexually provocative clothes and piercings anywhere except the ears”. Repeat offenders can be fined. The council approved the dress code 4 to 1 as part of an effort to update policies and ordinances. The 1 vote against was cast by the mayor, who said the part about underwear “takes away freedom of choice”. It seems that the mayor didn’t choose to read the 2007 Freedom of Choice Act.
It seems that research from the University of Pennsylvania and Northwestern University shows that women are slightly more likely to be spendthrifts. The research also shows that tightwads tend to marry spendthrifts and this leads to conflict. Although other studies show that people tend to marry partners of similar age, personality and demographics, feelings about money is one area where opposites attract. When there is something we don’t like about ourselves, we supposedly look for the opposite in a mate. Experts suggest discussing spending behaviors and financial negotiations before marriage. Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy divorce.
During the summer of 2009 curators at Buffalo’s Anderson Gallery were happy to have 15 drawings by Spanish surrealist, Salvador Dali, exhibited for the first time. The drawings were given by Dali to Dr. Edmund Klein over a 10-year period, starting in 1972 and were drawn on pages from sketchpads, art books and a paper written by Klein. Some are pictures of angels and have dedications to Klein. Klein died in 1999 and his widow made the drawings public in 2008 in order to sell them. However, giving the drawings as payment to Dr. Klein for dermatology treatments doesn’t mean Dali was a “skinflint’.
