Is it more valuable to sell a vintage lionel train set piece by piece or as a whole set?
Sets are generally valued higher than the total values of their individual components.
There's one important point to this, though. In order for this to be true, the original Lionel master carton, bearing the catalog number of the set, must be present. You should also have the individual boxes for each car, although this isn't as important as having the master carton.
You should also have all of the track-generally 8 curves, 7 straights, and one operating section, and the transformer if originally included(generally a #1033 or 1044).
If you don't have the master carton, you're probably better off selling the individual components. Even if the components were originally sold as a set, without the master carton, they're just a lot of engines and cars, and will generally sell for less than the total value of the individual components.
